Trips For Kids Quotes

Kids in circle

What do the people we serve have to say about Trips For Kids? Here's a sampling of feedback on our programs. We get encouraging comments like these all of the time. Kids, agency adults and volunteers enjoy our programs because they get so much out of them while having fun. By supporting our programs you'll feel good because your funding will enriching the lives of many Bay Area youth.

From the kids in our Re-Cyclery Program...

"Could pass on to Marilyn a big Thank You for hiring my friend Asa and myself to work in her bike shop some summers ago. We had been with a group called the Brethren, and by her influence on our lives at the time, both Asa and I left the group. I am now married and have 2 children."
- Tom (Gad) Carroll, teen employee

"I learned how to fix mountain bikes. I learned how to run the shop...business skills, like working with cash, teaching other kids. I like fixing bikes, especially the greasy parts. When I do it, I know I'm doing it right...and it's fun!"
- Vinnie Sooknanan, teen employee

"I can do the same things that I like to do and get paid for it. It's a good beginning working environment. They show you how to write up receipts, talk to customers, and work with money at the cash register."
- Fernando Arriaga, teen employee

"The Re-cyclery has given me something better to do, because if you work hard, you get rewards. I like that."
- Marlon, 15 years old

"I like coming to Re-Cyclery because when I stay home there is not much to do."
- Carlos Castillo 10 years old

From the kids who come on our rides...

"I learned if you keep trying you can get to the top."
- Morris, 11 years old, Stonestown YMCA, San Francisco

"My favorite part was going down some of the hills and making it. Today my legs hurt, but I would do it again."
- Ramiro Razo, Joshua Marie Cameron Academy, San Francisco

"I liked it because [the ride leaders] worked with us. I learned a lot of different things about plants, animals, rules of biking and how to control my bike. I felt good because I worked, but I enjoyed it. It was a lot of fun."
- Sam, 14 years old, Euclid Girls Home, San Francisco

"I liked the encouragement and patience you all (the volunteers) gave us and the feeling we accomplished something difficult. I learned that no matter how hard something is, don't give up cause in the end it all is worth the effort."
- Halimah, 17 years old, First Exposure, San Francisco

A Story Relayed by Director Marilyn Price...

While on a ride on Mt. Tam, David Klinger, one of our volunteers ran into two tough, streetwise teenagers. On talking to them, one of the youth shared that he had been into a heavy scene and even had scars all over his back as proof. David noticed that not only did he have many tattoos, but that he had markings of having been a member of a gang and what looked like cigarette burns on his body. He went on to mention that he would be "dead by now" were it not for this group called Trips For Kids. He had been on one of our rides a couple years ago and said it had made a big difference in his life to discover a viable alternative and to know that there are people who care. That day he had come with his friend to share with him his new-found love of mountain biking. All I can say is, "WOW, What we do works!!!!" I felt in my heart that it was true, but this is proof positive!

From adults at youth service agencies...

"I still get emails from my students who are now in college (and out of college). Every one of them talk about the bike trip that we took together with Trips For Kids when they were in the 6th, 7th and 8th grades. They talk about it as a highlight of their time in middle school. We all remember middle school and those aren't always years that many people look back on fondly...Trips for Kids has changed kids. I saw it over and over again, every trip I took with my students. One girl was failing most of her classes, was not interested in school outside of the boys she sat next to in class; I didn't know what to do with her. I took her on a bike trip and she was a natural. The other kids saw her cruising up the hills and fearlessly descending and they saw her in a new light. She saw herself in a new light. She gained confidence that stayed with her when we returned to class. It sounds like an after school special, but this girl turned around. It was amazing! I love Trips for Kids. ...Thank goodness for people like Marilyn!!!!"
- Shannonn Puckett, former Alameda Unified School District Teacher

"Our kids LOVE your trips. They talk about them for years afterwards and beg to go on more. These are kids form Hunter's Point, SF who would not go mountain biking if not for TFK."
- Robin Havens, Juvenile Justice Bike Program, San Francisco

"Trips For Kids has been an invaluable resource for young people at Jamestown over the last five years. Beyond the obvious benefit of getting them out of the Mission District, Trips For Kids has provided Jamestown youth with an opportunity to develop their teamwork skills in a new setting, to learn more about their environment, and to simply have fun. Every year, our kids ask if we are going on Trips For Kids. When I say yes, their excitement and the smiles on their faces tell all."
- Claudia Jasin, Jamestown Community Center, San Francisco

"Trips For Kids is a wonderful way for children to see different environments as well as challenge themselves with new experiences. It is also a great way to educate children on the importance of preserving the environment."
- Sara Chapman, Edgewood Center for Children and Families, San Francisco

"What a wonderful organization. We have so enjoyed our outings with you! Thank you for providing us with so many wonderful opportunities to bike, laugh, learn and grow!"
- Christy, Stonestown YMCA, San Francisco

And comments about the Re-Cyclery Thrift Shop...

"My car broke down and I was across the street and about to call a cab. I saw your shop and came over and bought a bike instead for $15."
- Re-Cyclery Customer
