TFK Buellton Rec featured in Santa Ynez Valley News

October 01, 2011

The local chapter of Trips for Kids, a national nonprofit organization, held its second outing Sept. 24 with a group of 19 students at the Santa Ynez Valley Dirt Club on Zaca Station Road.

The program at the Buellton Recreation Center introduces Santa Ynez Valley children from 11 to 16 years old to mountain biking and teaches them valuable life lessons, organizers say.

Paul Smith, a devoted mountain biker and cyclist who works with youth at the recreation center, began the program.

He said the local cycling community has eagerly rallied behind it, so additional riding opportunities for local youth are on the horizon.

Dr. J’s Bicycle Shop in Solvang is submitting a grant on behalf of Trips for Kids (TFK) to receive bikes from the Specialized company, while local cycling enthusiasts David and Lisa Tonello are coaching a mountain-biking team consisting of boys and girls attending any of the Valley’s high schools, Smith said.

The SYV Dirt Club is committed to supporting mountain biking opportunities for local youth as well as maintaining trails for riders of all ages. The club is holding a trail building and rehab weekend from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 8-9, at the Dirt Club, with a group ride to follow.
