San Rafael, CA. Christmas came EARLY for over 60 very excited children and their parents from San Rafael’s Canal District this past Saturday, December 21, as a record 65 bicycles were given away to local residents by Trips for Kids (TFK), a San Rafael-based nonprofit organization. The happy children and their equally appreciative parents drew random tickets through an exciting raffle conducted at TFK’s annual Winter Open House. The 65 bikes included new, donated and refurbished wheels by staff and kids at TFK’s Earn-a-Bike program located in their warehouse.
Thanks to all the generous donations from Tom and Bobbie Preston, PinkBike.com, Extreme Pizza, Mi Pueblo, Whole Foods, Weavers Coffee & Tea and delicious home baked treats from TFK volunteers. Besides delighting the kids, the event was designed to raise awareness about TFK’s Mountain Bike Rides and Earn-a-Bike programs for at-risk youth. TFK programs serve over 2,000 Bay Area youth annually, bringing youth on bike adventures in local parks and teaching them valuable work skills through learning about bike repair. The classes are held in the Canal District warehouse at 125 Larkspur Street.
TFK receives year round donations of bicycles at its popular Re-Cyclery Bike Thrift shop at 610 4th Street in San Rafael. The bikes are refurbished and then sold to the public to support TFK programs.
About Trips for Kids
Trips for Kids (www.tripsforkids.org), a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization based in Marin County, California, opens the world of cycling to at-risk youth through mountain bike rides and Earn-a-Bike programs. TFK rides are the “vehicle” through which the kids gain confidence, skills, and an appreciation for nature. TFK’s after-school Earn-a-Bike and job training programs teach kids how to build and repair bikes, while they learn the values of responsibility, patience, and hard work.
