How Trips for Kids Came to Be

Trips for Kids (TFK) has enriched the lives of over 172,000 young people across North America and Israel using a simple yet powerful tool: the bicycle. Founded in Marin County in 1988, social activist and cycling legend Marilyn Price pioneered the practice of bicycle trail riding to deliver lessons in personal responsibility, achievement, and environmental awareness through the simple act of having fun. Trips for Kids’ Trail Rides program offers profound new experiences and challenges that can transform attitudes, bolster self-confidence and introduce lifelong values. For some, these rides present pivotal moments of self-discovery that can tip the balance toward healthy lifestyle choices.

Starting out as a California dream on a mountain with a handful of volunteers, Trips for Kids has grown into a national movement with over 75 independent chapters running the Trail Rides program. With the formation of the new Trips for Kids national organization just this summer, the stand-alone 501c3 will focus on supporting the growth and refinement of the organization’s existing and future network of independent chapters, thus expanding TFK’s national footprint and awareness of its mission.

Another part of Trips for Kids is the Re-Cyclery bike shop and Earn-a-Bike program, established in 1994. In addition to providing bikes, parts, clothing, accessories and affordable transportation for Bay Area residents, the shop funds much of the Trips for Kids program costs. Meanwhile, the Earn-a-Bike program teaches youngsters valuable mechanical, bike riding and life skills in a safe and supportive environment.

A Win-Win Partnership

BikeFlights.com has been a tremendous supporter of Trips for Kids, both as a sponsor of our organization and through their Buck Up for Bikes program,” said Kim Baenisch, Executive Director of Trips for Kids Marin. “BikeFlight.comcustomers have raised over $2,635 since we started partnering with the Buck Up for Kids program in January. We are grateful for the financial support, as well as, the exposure Trips for Kids is receiving as a beneficiary. Ultimately every dollar helps us get more kids on bicycles, often for the first time!”

Not only does the Buck Up for Bikes program raise money for Trips for Kids, but their San Rafael Re-Cyclery and their eBay store use BikeFlights.com’s shipping services regularly.

“We love that customers who purchase bikes online from us can save money on shipping and have the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to four excellent bike organizations through BikeFlights.com,” said Brian Lee, Re-Cyclery Store Manager. “The process of shipping bicycles is straightforward and efficient making our customers return customers. It’s a win-win.”

Poised for Growth

Trips for Kids recently announced the appointment of Robert Alan Ping as its executive director. Ping will be responsible for leading the implementation of the national strategic plan to enhance and expand the Trips for Kids National organization of independent community chapters.

In April of this year, the TFK board announced it was separating the founding TFK Marin chapter from national efforts with the formation of TFK National and was conducting a search for an executive director. Ping is the result of that search.

A passionate bicycling and youth advocate, Ping is a nationally recognized leader with more than 25 years strategic management experience specializing in bicycling, walking, social equity and youth development. Prior to joining Trips for Kids, Ping was executive director of the Walkable and Livable Communities Institute, an educational community health organization, and worked for eight years as the technical director of the Safe Routes to School National Partnership, a public health effort to increase the number of children walking and cycling to school and in daily life.

“Robert’s proven leadership and depth of experience, enthusiasm, and commitment make him ideally suited to launch this next phase of the Trips for Kids National organizational development,” said Chuck Lesem, President of the Board of Directors of Trips for Kids. “We are excited to work with Robert to help us achieve our vision of a world where every kid in every community has the opportunity to know the joy of riding a bike and the freedom to explore the natural world on two wheels.”
