During President's day weekend three members from our Siena Youth Center Trips For Kids Bulldog Riders traveled to the National Youth Bike Summit in New York City.

The Youth Bike Summit (YBS) is a 3-day national conference bringing students, educators, advocates, researchers, policy makers and community leaders in order to: gather and share ideas; give youth a voice, and; encourage civic engagement and advocacy. Through workshops, presentations, keynote speakers, discussion, and visioning, their goal is to transform dialogue into action.

Trips for Kids Executive Director Robert Ping shared, "There are few opportunities for advocates of youth biking to get together and share ideas. This recent bike summit at which the Trips for Kids Bulldog Riders both presented at and attended is popular because it is lead by youth leaders for youth leaders. We think it was absolutely fantastic that the Bulldog team was invited to present. It's quite a compliment to them and their leaders. We know it took them a great deal of hard work and effort to raise the funds to attend and we are really proud of them.”

The youth and their directors traveled from California to New York City for the summit. "Our youth and program director worked hard to make this trip a reality. To go, they had to raise close to $3000 so the Bulldog Riders got busy doing food sales, bike sales and selling Jamba Juice cards. During this fundraising time we applied to present as a team on all the work we do around community engagement, advocacy and education with our cycling program. As a team it took two months for us to reach our fundraising goal but we did it," shared Trips for Kids Director Raphael Avendano.

Their workshop focused the power of education, advocacy, community, and mentorship through cycling, and shared ideas that better equipped youth cycling programs to work with local civic leaders and decision makers. They gave special consideration to how non-traditional learning spaces in afterschool programs helped build leadership.

"During the conference the team focused on not just taking youth outdoors hiking and mountain biking but also how we teach students how to fight for green space and bike lanes in the community. Furthermore, the Bulldog Riders team learned how to present at local council and board of supervisor meetings as well as help host a countywide health fair and bike rodeo. We had a great response to our workshop and we also had a good time in New York City visiting some monuments and venturing around town. We look forward to going next year to Atlanta home of the 2020 Youth Bike Summit and we hope other Trips for Kids chapters consider going," stated Avendano.
