Follow Trips for Kids to the Sea Otter Classic
Just talking about the Sea Otter Classic can get hearts pumping with excitement as the event dates draw nearer. For close to two decades, Trips for Kids Marin has participated in this unique fun-filled festival held at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, in Monterey, California. Trips for Kids staff, participants and volunteers from several chapters are gearing up for another adventure this week from April 11-14.
When the Sea Otter Classic launched in April 1991, it consisted of two days of bike racing that included 350 athletes participating and 150 spectators. The event is the brain child of co-founders Frank Yohannan and Lou Rudolph.
This year the event celebrates it's 28th year and has grown into a four-day festival that is considered to be the premier consumer bike exposition in North America hosting attendees from all over the globe, including more than 9,600 athletes and 72,500 fans. Sea Otter Classic is a place for companies to launch new products that impact the cycling industry including everything from nutritional food, to clothes, to gear and yes, bicycles! You just might get a glimpse of celebrities, like trial rider Danny MacAskill, showcasing their signature tricks.
"We love being there each year to participate with the wonderful bike community. It's a real treat to see people I have seen each year at the event and know we share the same enthusiasm for bicycling. The Sea Otter team has been so wonderfully generous. It's is nice to see Frank and Lou's vision just grow and grow," shares Trips for Kids Founder, Marilyn Price.
Frank and his team continue their generosity at this year's event by providing camping space for our Trips for Kids Second Annual Jamboree, where youth from neighboring California chapters are given the opportunity to interact, ride and connect with one another. Our youth, staff, and chaperones are also provided with complimentary tickets to enjoy all the festival has to offer.
"Sea Otter has always welcomed us with open arms, but they really outdid themselves by helping us find a spot for our very first Youth Jamboree. Some of our kids never get to spend time outside their own neighborhoods, so to be able to take them to the Sea Otter Classic to have fun and camp together really brings them a great deal of joy," stated Robert Alan Ping, Trips for Kids Executive Director.
This year, youth participants will also get to share a Sunday ride on trails at nearby Fort Ord. “The excitement just builds each week we get closer to the Sea Otter Classic,” shares Andy Phelps, Trips for Kids Support and Sponsorship Manager. “The kids know they are in for a sweet adventure. We also appreciate the opportunity to connect with many of our sponsors while we are at the festival. The kids get the chance to ride, see some super cool products and riding demonstrations, and also receive some awesome swag to take home.”
During this year’s festival, Trips for Kids will be tabling and selling clothing in booth #99. We hope you will stop by to take a moment to chat and spend a few minutes looking through the merchandise we will have available for purchase. “Those who have been to the Sea Otter Classic throughout the years know our booth has some really great cycling clothes for sale so they seek us out! Come early to scope out the best selection before it is gone,” suggests Phelps.
You can still purchase tickets to the Sea Otter Classic! We hope to see you there.
